A Practice-Oriented Procedure for Seismic Reliability Assessment of RC Structures Affected by Carbonation-Induced Degradation

Existing reinforced concrete (RC) buildings in Europe have generally been designed without proper consideration of seismic actions and capacity design principles, thus they tend to be vulnerable earthquakes. Moreover, since a significant proportion the aforementioned were developed during 1950s 1960s, are currently close end their service life. Therefore, assessment existing RC building is major issue structural engineering construction management, related analyses should take into account effect material ageing degradation. This paper proposes practice-oriented procedure for quantifying reliability, taking main effects carbonation-induced degradation phenomena. It summarizes aspects most up-to-date models members shows how nonlinear static (pushover) can utilized (in lieu time-consuming non-linear time history analyses) reliability with respect performance levels relevance engineering. A relevant case study finally considered aim showing some parameters, such as exposure class cover thickness, affect resulting buildings.
